So far retailers havr not really gotten serious about cutting prices to stimulate sales. If they don't get serious, they'll regret it when the Christmas shopping season is over.

300% to 200% Markup Maybe LOL   Right after Summer I bought 25 buck Khaki's for my Son for 9.00. Tell me they sell for less again.

don't fall for the old retailer's tricks people.  It's easy for them to mark up the price and then give you what you think is a discount, but you are actually paying full price on the item.

The buy one get one free...  A small frame that usually cost 2.50 the buy one get one free sale will sell you one for 5.50 and you get the second on free.  You end up paying more on a lot of these kinds of sales that aren't even a sale.

Hold on to your money, shop at your local thrift stores and yard sales and save.  Make you own xmas gifs for you loved ones, and stop wasting money on gift-wrapping paper, recycle and use paper bags you can color and decorate for the holidays.

I no longer "celebrate" the Holidays by spending money.

On Thanksgiving, I fast, in honor of all the hungry people of the world.  The day after, I abstain from all shopping.

And, for Christmas, I do absolutely no gift-giving. None.  Nada.

The only reason I ever go to a mall is if there is a movie theatre inside.  No shopping for me!

I have enough clothing to last for years.

Keeping the price of gas under $2.00 a gallon will also help out!

I'm still making repairs to my home due to Hurricane Ike.

The insurance payment was a joke!

How about sending me another stimulus check Uncle Sam!

Save your money dear, don't spend it.  The gas has fallen becuase people aren't spending, but once the spending starts again, the prices will go sky-high!

yeah, thank GOD Cheney is on the way out. He is the main reason why gas prices rose. What do you think he and those executives talked about in their closed door meeting 6 years ago ,when they set the energy policy for the whole country without any oversight from representatives of the people? Of COURSE they were figuring out solutions that included big profits for themselves.

Isn't it interesting how the prices can come down when nobodys buying and any other time you pay full throttle?  It just goes to show the mark up on stuff.

We're not doing Christmas this year, just having a dinner and gathering.  Something money can't buy.

It's not that interesting. It's basic economics: When demand drops that usually increases supply. Prices then come down. When they come down far enough, more and more people buy, thus increasing demand, thus increasing supply.

Look at the price of oil and gas over the last few weeks in comparison to the last 2 years: Same principles apply.

          Nothing new.

Even though they predict gas to be lower next year, I still expect it to go back up.  The lower price will increase demand, and they cut production by 150 mil barrels.

Gas has definitely come down but heating oil is still high.  Guess we'll just have to sit cold and not buy oil for awhile so it can come down too....basic economic principle.

Pfft...what a world we live in.

It is yet Thanksgiving- a Real American Celebration of Family, Food, Friendships- BUT-

everything is skipping this Holiday, Why?

"We The People" would do well to Celebrate all that we have for which we might give thanks, rather than, think of the next Holy Day now made so commercial, a day on which we should not be buying for ourselves, our children but a day that IS a Birthday... How Many of you Will say to that Man who was born just to die for you, "Happy Birthday" - not many, huh?

On YOUR Birthday - do you want folks greeting YOUwith "Seasons Cheers" ,,,If you want an acknowledgement of the day of your birth then why deny HIM the same respect?

Give what He gives, Love some stranger. Give what He gives, Feed a lonely soul.

              Un-Common Common Sense

As a retailer I find this story and if true the major retailers insane! Most of us don't have 60% mark ups so if they are truly discounting 60% ( and I find it hard to believe)  then  they are losing money. Any store that loses money will go out of business, it's that simple.  We're not discounting at all! We might sell less but at least we'll make some money on what we do sell. Any store that is in business to lose money will not be in business very long. More than likely they are discounting some advertised products just to get people in the door and then try and sell them something they can make a profit on. Don't think for a minute Walmart or any other store is going to give everything away. If something sounds too good to be true it probably is. Don't buy into these scams like the media does!

I think the stores are trying to extend the holiday period because this is the time of the year when stores make the bulk of their money for the entire year. Things are very slow.

I have noticed that this year our strip centers are now decorated for Christmas and in Walmart they were blasting Christmas music last weekend. Last year (at least in my area) there was very little Christmas decorating by stores as they didn't want to insult anyone that doesn't celebrate that holiday. Seems it turns out the only people they insulted were the people who do celebrate Christmas, the ohters didn't care one way or another. I feel like they are trying to get me in the mood. I will buy if it is a really good bargain, but I am not buying anywhere near as much as I used to. I have no money to do that. I wonder if the prices will get better as it gets closer to Christmas?

to svend: our mall looks empty! Some stores seem to have no one all day! I live in the deep south if that helps.

I was in my neighborhood CVS this past Sunday, the employees were busy stocking the aisles with Christmas merchandise.  What got me was they had a Hispanic radio station on blasting out Spanish music. Which is quite unusual for my neighborhood. I assumed they had all voted for Obama and agreed that "we must teach our children to speak Spanish".

                  THOUGHTPOLICE

With retailers predicting such a glum season this year I think this would be the perfect time for everyone to walk into these stores ,walk right up to the first employee you see and wish them a merry Christmas. If you do not get the same response back or some weak crappy "happy holidays" I don't want to offend the devil worshippers then you have the opportunity to tell them "see ya never,I'll go somewhere they can wish me and my family a Merry Christmas publicly.

Black Friday is a Joke. Stores know stupid people will be out shopping in heards so why would they give the best deals then. The stores put 1 or 2 items at a steal then when they are sold out of that item they got all the stupid shoppers in their store with money to spend! I finally went to my family and put up this question, Who wants out of buying presents for each other at Christmas (this is of course for adults, we still get stuff for the kids) I said if anyone wants to keep buying, no problem I will buy for you, but if you want out, I will not get you anything and you can spend the money you would of spent on me on something for you when you want to buy it, not under pressure days before Christmas. Guess what? Everyone in my family wanted out and thanked me for bringing it up. They all said they wanted to but didn't know how to say it without affending someone. Now Christmas isn't a dread of getting things someone doesn't want and pressure shopping.  We now spend time with each other and really enjoy the season!  Get back to what Christmas is about not what retailers want you to think it is!

I was retail junkie for 27 years. Anything from store management to advertising, to human resources. Retail has shot themselves in the foot over the last decade trying to emulate WalMart. The service levels in the stores are terrible, everything is made in China, and who needs a pair of $1000 boots? While the market has fragmented into several different niches', the "Big Box" retailers have missed the boat. I do not even look at the J.C. Penny flyer anymore, I already know it is the "Biggest Sale of the Season". They deserve their own fate.

I agree with you, and someone told me to use up the credit cards and don't pay them.  Even heard this on the radio since the government is going to start bailing out the credit card companies.

Hmmmm, maybe I will, maybe I won't, but it's a thought worth thinking about!

That's a pretty dishonest thing to do. And when the rest of us pay with our tax dollars for your bill, you will be known as just another do nothing.

Why would we want to unionize our retailers? When you overcharge for your labor, it gets added into the prices we pay. When you overcharge for your labor and hold business owners captive, they go out of business. We once had a flourishing marine industry until unions forced them to pay for workers who didn't even come to work. They finally went elsewhere for their labor and we lost jobs forever. Ships go right on past the New York Harbor to go to Charleston, SC. and truck their containers up to New York and it's cheaper than dealing with the union workers on the pier. So don't tell us about unions...we all know about them. They don't any longer protect workers, they blackmail them and they close down businesses and cost jobs.

Why would it be so dishonest?  The people running the companies are going to use the FEDS monies to pay off their credit card debt.  Why should all these people ri\unning all these bug businesses get the break and nobody else.  Bottom line it, you and I the tax payer is going to have to pay all this loaned out money back to the government anyhow.

Don't you think they are dishones for taking the people's money and giving themselves big bonuses knowing that they were already in financial trouble.

Can't believe Americans are buying the crackpot theory that when labor prices go up, they end up paying more for stuff. That's RICH PEOPLE feeding you a simplistic line, economics for dummies, or ultra dummies. The fact is that when labor is well compensated, families end up paying a much much lower percentage of their income on goods. Look at countries with high labor costs: Ireland, Germany, Italy. They pay about 15% of their income on food. Look at those with no unions or total screwing of labor: Russia, China, etc. They pay 50-60% on food. Don't believe the hype that divides good working people against each other. I'm not talking socialism here. i'm talking about being compensated for a good days' work.

That's just what you think.  Look at the interest rates going up on all your cards regardless if you are not buying now, but when you do buy, you will pay for that purchase.

They are even cutting back on the days for you to pay your credit-card bill from 21 days to 14 days, and some are even withing 7 days now.   Those that pay on time so they don't have to pay the interest on their cards are having their bills sit aside until the due date passes and then they'll process your checks.  So you will get a second bill to pay off the late fee and interest fees as well.

How much does the crap they peddle really cost anyway? How much are we usually overcharged?

The marketing class I took long ago mentioned 60% over the retailers actual cost (wholesale), to be fair and competitive.

Anyway, I intend to read a book titled "The Limits of Power", which discusses our country's current problems as they relate to all the hedonistic consumerism of our culture.

I also am concious of the recent message from the Pope concerning consumerism.

It's too bad that 2/3 of our economy is dependent on profligacy, and not anchored in something more concrete

As you noticed that all the name brand shoes like Nike and such you don't see on TV any more.  They only cost $13 to make overseas, and then they charge 169 for a pair of them to pay off all these lamo sports players that did the commercial endorsements on their shoes.

It's all about GREED, and these people just got too greedy, and the sports players should be boycotted as well, and they certainly shouldn't be paid millions to toss a ball on a field or dribble one across a gymnasium.

What a joke these people have become, and how stupid can people be to pay their hard earned monies to these ridiculous games and shoes!

a $1,030 pair of Christian Louboutin boots can be purchased for $618

Still way over priced for boots, and not a sale.  These boots are just sporting a label and that's about it.  Ditch the label names and drop the prices to where they should be.  $119 for a pair of boots.

These companies are hurting all because they got too greedy and think that a pair of leather boots with a name label on it is worht more than any other pair of leather boots.

Sorry, but I got news for you, I'd rather have a pair of boots to wear without some name brand stamped on it.  If you paid em to wear you name brand boots then send me a pair of them.  FREE of course!

When a company prices their merchandise alot of people get paid. There are the people who sell the parts to make the merchandise, then the actual merchandise and the salaries for those people, then there are the shippers and the truckers and the receivers and the sales clerks and the overhead of the store...all of those thing go into how much they charge for each item. Each store has a little play in what they can sell the merchandise for, but when you continually force stores to go down on their prices, it costs jobs. When we unionize stores the prices go up as well. Stores have to pay salaries....don't you want jobs?

Greater population, greater demand, greater cost.  Gas in Denver was $199.9 at Conoco.

I have a budget of $400 for Christmas gifts for 6 kids.  One outfit, one doll, one toy, and two books apiece.  Nothing more.    Stockings will be filled with fruit, nuts and one candy cane.  We don't exchange gifts with other families.  We do give to the local shelters, Inter-Faith, County Action Center.  this is nothing new for our family.  We have done this for years, in good times and now in bad times.  The kids know there is a financial crisis for most of the family and their friends families.  Our 7 year old wrote "no gifts, please" on her birthday party invitations.  Live and celebrate with what you have not with what you don't have.

Why so cynical?  This is a great time to buy things you NEED, not just WANT!  Just be sure to pay cash, and NOT put it on a credit card - with escalating interest.  If you can't afford cash, maybe one should wait, another sale will be coming along.  Don't get caught up in the "Holiday Fever".  IMO better sales will come up AFTER the Holidays.

I do a lot of research of sales and deal sites and have noticed that companies have been trying to out "sale" each other for a long time.

For instance lists local and online deals for stores, restaurants and travel.  I see Macy's, Best Buy and Saks on there all the time.  Same thing with Spafinder.com...they have lots of recurring spa deals.  In the end, it's good for us!

OK, here is a stupid idea.

"Among the moves, stores are scaling back on seasonal hiring and will strive to staff stores based on how well each location's sales fare."

The first thing I do when I walk in to a store with a check-out line all the way to the dressing room is walk out.  Get me in, get me out and I spend money.

Of course they are scaling back on seasonal employment. Don't you realize that when demand is up, so are jobs? If you stop buying, and keep looking for all these bargains, all you're doing is costing jobs. The problem is that you think you're punishing the retailers, but what about the manufacturing jobs that aren't going to be there, or the factories that will close because the merchandise that they make is not selling and so the factory can't pay to make it or to pay salaries. But gee..go ahead with your greed. You re costing Americas workers with your greed.

I've been out shopping and I can't say that I've seen any good deals.  I thought it might be a good time to pick up a pair of shoes, but the sales I've seen so far seem pretty run of the mill.  I haven't seen any deals on video games.  I haven't seen deals on DVDs recently.  Even food price seem to be up right now.

Everybody just stop----spending.  So far there really aren't any good deals out there.  I keep track of prices and over 90% is just your average sale.  If you need something that seems to be on sale, demand a bigger discount.  That seems to work at a few places. Otherwise just tell them you won't buy. Same thing at banks-if you need to borrow, demand a better discount. After all, our government just bought up part of them with our dollars, so tell them that you have their stock and they better give you a good deal.

same BS article I read last year. Same this year. go look in the stores and actually see how much new merchandise they have gotten in for Christmas and if it truly is on sale by these huge discounts. Stores have cut back on Christmas discounts years ago and now bring in the very bear minimum of fresh new merchandise for Christmas having been burned years and years ago. This year it is even worse from what I have seen so far.
