Aides to a bipartisan group of auto-state senators said Thursday they have reached a compromise to speed emergency loans to Detroit's Big Three car makers.
i dont know about you guys, but as a taxpayer, i dont how much more of a #$%^ing i can take!
here's an idea, stop paying UAW autoworkers $75 an hour just to push a button on an assembly line, take that savings and fix their own problem. i am sick and tired of being responsible about my finances and having to bail everyone else out, especially welfare recipients. Enough is enough!
Did you not read Carol-Ann's post, it isn't uaw workers, it is the non union employees making the big money. The companies will always reward anti union workers.
salem-
Carol-Ann's post is rather irrelevant. What she cited is NOT the case for the vast majority of union workers. PERIOD. We have the stats and they aren't pretty.
There are union plants and non-union plants. The non-union plants have much lower labor costs - in line with what the market dictates, not what the union dictates. Those are the facts.
Can I get a bailout check too? $40,000 will do. I'm not asking for billions, so I would think that my request should easily be approved.
yes, give each person in america a bailout cheque, whether or not they can fly on their personal learjet to washington to make their case. these dems and gops are both incredibly wasteful, same old washington. mr b nochange is my new name for the dem leader, fits the bill. hahaha, did you get that last one ... hahah.. too many clintonites and nochange, nochange, nochange. god bless america, as our politicians certainly wont.
do not bailout auto industry !
let them go into bankruptsy and reorganize to build more efficient and green
vehicles.
maybe then they wont need taxpayers money
My favorite part of this article is
"If that agreement is not reached, the earliest a vote might come is on Saturday and it was unclear if lawmakers would stay in Washington that long ahead of the November 27 Thanksgiving holiday. "
The country in such a mess and the lives of hundreds of thousands of people on the line and lawmakers need to leave on Friday for Thanksgiving vacation? Are ya kidding me? With all the layoffs past, present and future, folks at my company are working 10 hour days and weekends to keep our companies afloat. Not saying Congress has an 8 hour work day, they probably have lots of special events and lunches and dinners to go to where they politic our livliehoods away. I have always been told that as a salaried employee ( they are, aren't they) you are paid for getting the job done, not by the timeclock.- If your job takes more than 5 days a week, then work til you get it done.
Think they should go home on Wednesday night just like the rest of us, pay the same inflated air travel rates we have to, get in the mess at the airports and snarled in the same traffic.
I certainly hope that the UAW's Gettelfinger is prepared to make major concessions to the current union contracts!
I wonder how much he (Gettlefinger I mean.....fingers in what I ask?) Makes and how many people he stepped on and screwed over to get where he is at today. Chances are whether there is a bailout or not...he won't be affected by anything....he will just be able to retire early without a care in the world other than where to travel and which island to vacation on.
What wonderous technology are you talking about? Hybrids? Have you priced one lately? Electric? Seen the price for those? Fuel cell? You think it's ready? Get a clue.
I have 1 large question:
Why does Washington take such a severe break prior to Holidays, when the rest of us have to work up until and thru the WED before thanksgiving. WHO PAYS THEM FOR THIER TIME OFF WHILE WE HAVE TO CONTINUE TO WORK.
And as far as the Auto industry goes, I am curious if the bailout funds would actually go to the industry or the BONUES to the Officers of these companies. If the CEO's and officers of such industries would state and guarantee not to take bonuses, raises for a solid year, maybe they just may save their corps.
Additionally Ford's quality has been going down since around 93-94', but their prices have consistently risen for a less dependable product. Thus, why would we as taxpayers, want to bail them out, so that they may continue producing poor non-dependable products??????
Possibly if 2-3 of these industries merged, the final product would be better, more dependable and last much much longer.
My old 87' Ford P-up has over 300,000 miles, today that would be impossible for them to produce such worthiness.
Sorry American Autos, but it is time to downsize your market, stop competing and start producing offering more dependable products if you want to compete in the real world.
Stop your greedy endeavors and go back to work. Greed as we have seen only produces the want for more and more and more. Can you see where there want has gotten you???As I tax payer, I DO NOT WANT TO BAIL YOU OUT, NOR SHOULD I; UNLESS YOU CONCEDE TO TAKING LESS and LESS and LESS for yourselves.
You are correct.
So, why are we wasting our time here? They will not listen to the people in this country. I am going to write my congressman this afternoon, do you think it will help? It will only help me by venting.
Yes, write your reps because in the end WE are the voice and WE speak volumes when it's time to vote. Do me a favor, if we bail these slugs out despite the obvious opposition of most citizens REMEMBER how your reps voted because THEY will be asking for your vote again someday.
Write them for what American's wrote them saying not to bailout the Financial Industry. So much that the website was shut down from all the emails and what happened they passed the bailout anyway. When the majority of American's (their constituents) were against it.
If you want to contact Congress you can do so toll-free by calling either (800) 862-5530 or (866) 220-0044. When the Capitol operator answers, simply ask to be connected to a particular congressman or senator. It doesn't have to be YOUR congressman or senator. Congress-critters can block our emails, but they can't block our calls.
There is a coal industry in West Virginia. My dad and many other relatives broke their backs in the underground for thirty plus years. Do you know how much pension they got? Believe me, $1400. per month sounds like a dream.
For those of you who fault the union workers I'd like to know how many of them would have the benefits of 40 hr. workweeks, overtime, etc. if labor unions did not exist. Oh, the employers granted these benfits with no problem.
Because the blame for legacy costs will be a future CEO's problem. They decided to deal with it later.
Both sides are greedy but I put most of the blame on the UAW
EXTORTION
I am certain that unions served their purpose at one time. They may do so now. But not to the extent to what they were started for to begin with. In my experience; the only things unions have done again in my experience is take money from the workers and negotiate with employers on things behind the scenes apart from what the workers need. Again, their original purpose is far beyond what is going on today. I can speak to this having had 1st hand knowledge.
Unions had a place and a time, and neither are applicable now. Attempting to compare conditions 50-100 years ago with today is ridiculous. Dinosaurs had a place and time and they are gone now too. They got too fat.
A Bailout, or a Loan with "guarantees" is a bad thing for the government to be providing to these companies, until they actually prove that they can run a business without running it into the ground and spending all the company's cash and goodwill. Both the companies as well as the Unions involved need to sit down and figure out whether or not they will have a product, and jobs in the future, and how those two things will work to sustain the businesses.
Remember this, all the loans that were given out to people who could not pay them back, were given out with so called guarantees, and so many of them are now in default, which I think put us in the immediate picture we find ourselves. If we go back further, we find that that was fueled by people trying to make Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae profitable. Even others hedged that and made fortunes on the downturn.
Don't be so fast to spend my money on someone who doesn't want to make the appropriate changes, or on someone who won't.
Bailout here, Bailout there, who's going to bailout the bailouters?
Let them go bankrupt and reorganize. Let them sell their private jets. Let them forego all luxury perks. Take a look at the unreasonable labor union practices. Since the ceo of ford recieved a bonus of $21million last year, and now his company is broke, let him contribute last years bonus. There should be no bonuses for executives who preside over failing companies. The money should go to all those who give their days to make the companies succeed, including those retired. Then, after all that is resolved, maybe we can start discussing a bailout. But don't come after my money until those other issues are resolved.
People! We are willing to bail-out AIG who, after they got hold of our billions went on weekends to London for hunting and Hawaii-- and never took ANY responsibility for this financial debt mess!!!Autoworkers will be affected & the auto industry is willing to follow regulations & be transparent. $25 billion is chump change to the likes of AIG and the banking cheaters. Letting our auto industry go bust would be much worse than a bridge loan of $25 billion. Personally, I think AIG and the banks should give the money BACK so that we can use the bail-out money to make loans to actual companies with real workers.
What each and everyone of should do (I am!!) is write your congressperson and senator and explain to them that you have run into financial difficulty, no fault of your own, nobody told us that all those credit cards, and exorbitant hospital bills even after medical insurance, food increases, gas increases and ask for a bailout to pay all your bills. As a condition of these funds, our respresentatives should give us a list of conditions; cut back on consumer spending = cut back on foreign investiment and offshore production, buy less gas and cut energy consumption = make factories green, adopt making electric cars, stop making gas guzzlers, cut back all the parties, going out for dinner = cut exorbitant upper mgmt salaries and bonuses, including private jets and other extravagent perks. Then maybe I might get that bailout and the fatcats will too. Makes me think about those cartoons depicting the fat capitalists with his boot on the necks of the people!!!
Their vehicles already match the Japanese for mileage vehicle for vehicle. What are you asking for?
Price and quality
Can anyone tell me what is happening? This is a prime example of how our senators justify their jobs. The big three should re evaluate the way they do business, the unions are just sucking them dry and no one is really caring for the worker. What about asking all those CEOs, top executives and Union representatives to put some of that money that they have been taking back into the companies that they are running into the ground. I'm sure that they can come up with some cash.
With the economy as is, why is the government/senate worried about working around (god forbid THRU) the Thanksgiving Holiday? Priorities people!
What good will come from dumping money into the auto makers if the banks will not lend money to business and indiviuals to purchase them?
LET THEM DIE.. put the greedy CEO's in jail, take their cash and let the UAW workers go out and find non-union jobs making REASONABLE pay. I'm so sick of this BS, greedy bastards want US to bail them out? Go to hell and Pelosi and her crew can go with them.
Don’t give me this crap about ‘jobs’ and the disaster it will create, Toyota, Subaru, BMW, Suzuki, Honda and the like will swiftly pick up the slack and jobs will be created.
This is the natural evolution of a free market economy. Those who SUCK fail, those who do not prevail.
And the profits will go back to Japan and the trade balance will continue to get worse. Nice plan.
That's how it works redeyes, it's called FREE market, FREE to succeed and FREE to fail. I could give 2 sh*ts about the 'trade deficit' when the US can't produce something worth buying at a reasonable price let someone else do it. My company produces a great product, built in the US and sold all over the world. The CEO makes less than 250K and we are not unionized. Funny how that works, we are thriving.
So 'we' should send 'our' money into overpaid factory workers, and insanely overpaid exec's bank accounts?! The Japanese hire Americans, the Big 3 hire Americans, the Beg 3 go under, the Japanese will have to hire more Americans to fill the void. And, heaven forbid, the average American can afford a 'new' car. They brag they are burning through 5 billion a day, so that 25 billion will only last a week.
I got a cure; cut the wages down to something reasonable, from the top down, don't pay out those hugh bonuses, eleminate those ridiculus fringe benefits. AND fix your own company.
While Erwin does have the sound of a bit of a parrot reactionary, the one thing he said that is likely to be true is that Japanese and German companies will swoop down and buy up these failed factories and retool them for their cars.
Also likely is that the government will shore up the pension and benefit plans of the lay workers and most middle management. That is also the right thing to do.
True the UAW may be disbanded because of this. And true auto workers may find themselves in a meritocracy instead of a union guaranteed job. But this resetting will benefit everyone in the end and allow us to live in a more realistic economy, instead of one artificially inflated by entitlement.
You said it, Jim. i'm with ya. I concur. what happens when the bailers run out of money to give the bailees? what then, perhaps another reversal of fortune?
Our government, our country has become such a ridiculous joke. i would laugh if i wasnt so pissed off.
This makes sense. No matter what you do or did for a living you can not be as myopic as to believe that the big three or one of them, or all the related businesses that will struggle and/or fail, can HELP the nation or the mess were in. The boys in power, you know the same ones that did not and do not want to help the auto industry are the same ones who have bailed out there buddies and /or political allies. Why was the Freddy and Fanny and all the rest deserving but something that will save hundreds of thousands or millions of jobs for the "middle class's NOT??

Have you been to Europe? They drive these microscopic little cars where two people in the front seat are touching shoulders. Are you ready for that America? The cars are fuel efficient. Gas was $2.00 a gallon in Europe 25 years ago.
Small cars are no problem for Americans. We take showers. Europeans don't for the most part.
And a lot of those cars are made by Ford and GM. They know how, but they don't sell here.
Having spent a month in India....we drove an SUV made by Chevy. Very efficient and quick little thing. Not short on amenities either. I wouldn't mind having one here. I've never heard of it in USA and never seen anything like it around here. Why is it sold there but not here? Because they can sell @!$%# to us and we eat it right up.
Yeah - I've been all over the world. Basically people drive what they want and can afford. Same thing happens here.
So what's your point?
Congress as a group does not care what the American public thinks or wants. Individual members of Congress do what it takes for them to get reelected. Nothing more, nothing less. They do not care one whit that their approval rating by the public is around 20%. Our approval buys Congress as a group absolutely nothing. We the people have absolutely no power. One man one vote is a charade. Now we are entering into the administration of a new president. However, the members of his cabinet and the members of Congress are not new. They are recycled political hacks who have no skills or talents to commend them. We the people act as if we accomplished something in our recent election. The fact that we are absolutely powerless to provoke any change whatsoever is being worked out daily before our very eyes, and we do not have the common sense to recognize our total impotence. All we can do is write stupid comments on these blogs, throw things at the television, and hope for something better. We are the world and we are utter fools.
Nothing hurts like the truth.

That is why I have started an act to restore our Government. The Act is called The Re-Establishment Act of the People 2008. It will restore our Government back to its Constitutional Republic that it was meant to be, and do away with partisanship. It will create an independant investigation into all members of Congress and remove any member found to have commited any kind of wrong doings against the people. It will put the Government back in the peoples hands. If you are interested in knowing more contact me and I will send you more Info.

lets face it this is just another step toward government control and socialism. Lets bail out the big companies and banks. Forget the american public, we are all expendable. The rich keep getting richer and the poor will just die
